Samsung smart TVs run Samsung's own operating system, Tizen. It doesn't run Android apps and you can't install apps from outside Samsung's store, so you're limited to the IPTV players Samsung lists for your model. That choice is smaller than on Android-based devices, and it changes over time, but many people watch IPTV on their Samsung TV without any extra hardware.
Check your TV's model year
App choice depends heavily on how old the TV is, so it helps to know your model year before you start. Find the model code in Settings > Support > About This TV, or on the label on the back. Samsung puts a letter for the year in the code; on a Crystal UHD TV such as the UE55DU7100, it's the D at the start of the series name.
| Letter in the model code | Model year |
|---|---|
| A | 2021 |
| B | 2022 |
| C | 2023 |
| D | 2024 |
| F | 2025 (Samsung skipped E) |
TVs from the last three or four years generally have the most up-to-date apps. On older models, the player you want may no longer be offered, or may install but stop receiving updates.
Finding an IPTV app
- Press Home and open Apps.
- Use the search to look for “IPTV”.
- Check each app's description: whether it supports Xtream Codes logins or M3U playlists, and whether it charges an activation fee.
- Install the one that suits you and open it.
Which players appear depends on your TV's model year and region. Newer TVs generally have a wider and more up-to-date selection. Read recent reviews in the store before paying for anything: they quickly show whether an app still works well on current TVs.
How MAC-based players work
Many TV players, including Smart IPTV, don't ask for your login on the TV. Instead, the app shows your TV's MAC address and you add your playlist on the developer's website from a phone or computer. These apps commonly offer a short trial, then charge a one-off activation fee per TV, paid to the app developer. Always use the developer's official website.
Copy the MAC address exactly as the app shows it, including the colons. A single wrong character is the most common reason a playlist doesn't appear. Some apps also show a device key or code to enter alongside it.
Tips for Samsung TVs
- Use a wired connection if your TV has an Ethernet port; TV Wi-Fi is often weaker than a dedicated streaming stick's. A TV's Ethernet port often runs at up to 100 Mbps, which is still about 4 times what one 4K stream needs.
- Keep the TV's software updated under Settings > Support > Software Update.
- No sound on some channels? Try changing the TV's digital audio output format, or see IPTV with no sound.
- Fast sport looks juddery? Try the Picture Clarity settings under Expert Settings in the picture menu. Auto suits most people; turning it off gives a more film-like look.
- Older TVs may have less memory, so large TV guides can be slow to load.
Samsung TV Plus isn't the same thing
Samsung TVs come with Samsung TV Plus, a free service of ad-supported channels. It's delivered over the internet like IPTV, but it's Samsung's own service and has no way to add a subscription from another provider. Your channels appear in the IPTV player you install, not in TV Plus.
When a streaming stick is the better choice
If you can't find a suitable app, the app feels slow, or you want a specific player such as TiviMate, plug a streaming device into a spare HDMI port. A Fire TV Stick or a Google TV device usually gives a smoother experience and more choice, and you keep using your Samsung TV's screen. Turn on Anynet+ (Samsung's name for HDMI-CEC) in the TV's External Device Manager settings, and the Samsung remote can often control the stick's menus too.
