macOS doesn't come with an IPTV player, and Apple's own apps won't open IPTV playlists. Fortunately, several good players run on both Apple silicon and older Intel Macs.
Your options on macOS
| Player | Cost | TV guide | Signs in with |
|---|---|---|---|
| VLC media player | Free | No | M3U link |
| IINA | Free | No | M3U link |
| Kodi | Free | Yes, with an EPG link | M3U link |

| Mac App Store players | Varies | Varies | Varies |
VLC media player
Free and open source. Choose File > Open Network, paste your M3U playlist link and VLC loads the channel list. It has no TV guide, so it's ideal for quick checks rather than everyday viewing. If channels stutter, raising VLC's network caching (in the full preferences, under Input / Codecs) to around 3000 ms usually helps.
IINA
A free, open-source player built for macOS, with a cleaner, more Mac-like look than VLC. Choose File > Open URL (Shift + Command + O) and paste your M3U link. Like VLC, it has no programme guide, but it supports picture-in-picture, which is handy for keeping a match in the corner while you work.
Kodi
Kodi for macOS, with the official PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on, gives you a full TV guide and channel groups. On recent versions of macOS you may need to confirm you want to open it the first time, via System Settings > Privacy & Security. Our Kodi IPTV guide covers the set-up.
IPTV Smarters for macOS
The developer of IPTV Smarters Pro offers a macOS version, and on Apple silicon Macs some iPad apps from the App Store also run. Download from the App Store or the developer's official website only.
Mac App Store players
Several IPTV players are listed in the Mac App Store, some free with in-app purchases. Check recent reviews, the last update date and whether they support Xtream Codes logins before paying. Some developers sell one purchase that also covers the iPhone and iPad and Apple TV versions.
Tips for smooth playback
- Use Ethernet (via an adapter on most MacBooks) or stay close to your router on 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- Close browser tabs and apps that stream or download in the background.
- Keep macOS and your player updated for the latest video-decoding improvements.
- On battery, Low Power Mode can affect playback. Plug in for long viewing sessions.
Which Macs handle 4K best
4K streams usually use HEVC (H.265) video. Macs with Apple silicon, from the M1 onwards, decode it in hardware, so 4K plays smoothly while the fans stay quiet and the battery lasts. Older Intel Macs vary: recent ones manage well, but on older models 4K can stutter or make the Mac run hot, and HD Premium may be the better fit for watching on that screen.
If the display turns off during a long programme, check System Settings > Lock Screen. Most players keep the screen awake while video is playing, but a few don't when they're in a small window.
Handy VLC shortcuts on a Mac
- Space pauses and resumes.
- Command + F toggles full screen.
- Command + Right/Left arrow moves to the next or previous item in the playlist, which is the quickest way to change channel.
- Command + Up/Down arrow changes the volume.
Using a Mac with a TV or external display
If your Mac is connected to a TV with HDMI, set the display's refresh rate to 50 Hz where the option exists (System Settings > Displays). UK broadcasts run at 50 frames per second, so matching the refresh rate gives smoother motion, particularly in sport. Set the resolution to the TV's native resolution, and use a cable or adapter that supports it.
Watching on your TV
You can mirror your Mac to an Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible TV from Control Centre > Screen Mirroring, or connect it with HDMI. Mirroring adds a little delay and can soften the picture, so for regular TV viewing an Apple TV with its own IPTV app is usually better. On iPhone and iPad, see our iOS app guide.
