The Fire TV Stick is popular for good reason: it's inexpensive, small and easy to set up. But people look for alternatives when their stick slows down with large TV guides, when they want a wired connection for steadier 4K, or when a player app they want isn't available on Fire TV. Here are the options worth considering for IPTV, and who each suits.
Why the choice changed in 2025 and 2026
There's a new reason to think carefully before buying another Fire Stick. In late 2025 Amazon launched the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, its first stick running Vega OS instead of the Android-based Fire OS, and the Fire TV Stick HD released in 2026 runs Vega OS too. Vega OS only installs apps from the Amazon Appstore, and Amazon has said all its future Fire TV Sticks will use it.
For IPTV, that matters because several of the most popular players, including TiviMate, have usually been installed on Fire TV from their developers' websites, which Vega OS doesn't allow. The Fire OS models Amazon still sells, the Fire TV Stick 4K Plus (previously sold simply as the Fire TV Stick 4K), the 4K Max and the Fire TV Cube, work as before, and sticks you already own stay on Fire OS. Amazon has also started blocking some apps on Fire TV that it has identified as giving access to pirated content. Our Fire TV Stick guide has the model-by-model details.
What to look for in a replacement
- App choice: can it run the IPTV player you want? Our player guide lists which apps run where.
- Power and memory: large channel lists and guides need a responsive processor and at least 2 GB of RAM.
- Ethernet: a wired connection is the most effective cure for buffering.
- 4K and HEVC: essential for 4K Premium.
- Updates: mainstream brands keep devices patched and app stores working.
The alternatives compared
| Device | System | IPTV app choice | Wired connection | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google TV Streamer | Google TV | Wide (Google Play) | Built-in Ethernet | A straightforward, well-supported upgrade |
| Nvidia Shield TV / Shield TV Pro | Android TV | Wide (Google Play) | Built-in Ethernet | Power users who want speed and flexibility |
| Apple TV 4K | tvOS | Good (App Store) | On the Ethernet model | Apple households and very smooth performance |
| Certified Android TV / Google TV box | Android TV or Google TV | Wide (Google Play) | Varies by model | Choice of hardware and price |
| Amazon Fire TV Cube | Fire OS | Appstore, plus apps from developers' sites | Built-in Ethernet | Staying with Fire TV, with more power |
| Fire TV Stick 4K Plus or 4K Max | Fire OS | Appstore, plus apps from developers' sites | With Amazon's adapter | Replacing an old stick like for like |
| MAG box | Portal-based | None (portal only) | Built-in Ethernet | A dedicated, simple IPTV box |
Specifications change between generations, so check the current model's details before buying.
Google TV Streamer
Google's current streaming box, and the successor to the Chromecast with Google TV, which Google stopped making in 2024. It launched in the UK at £99 and runs Google TV, so you get Google Play with players such as TiviMate, plus 4K HDR, a built-in Ethernet port and 4 GB of memory, double the 4K Chromecast's. For most people moving on from a Fire Stick, it's the simplest like-for-like upgrade. See IPTV on Chromecast and Google TV.
Nvidia Shield TV
Long regarded as one of the most powerful Android TV devices, the Shield handles large guides and 4K streams with ease, has Gigabit Ethernet and offers advanced settings such as frame-rate matching. It costs more than most alternatives and the current hardware dates from 2019, but Nvidia is still updating it (Shield Experience 9.2.4 arrived in February 2026), and it remains a favourite with enthusiasts. The Pro version adds more memory and storage, and USB ports for recording to a drive.
Apple TV 4K
Very fast, polished and well supported with software updates. IPTV players come from the App Store, which has a good selection, including Smarters Player Lite, but not TiviMate. Choose the model with Ethernet if you can (on the 2022 model, that's the 128 GB Wi-Fi + Ethernet version). It's an excellent choice if your household already uses iPhones and iPads; see IPTV on Apple TV.
Certified Android TV and Google TV boxes
Several established brands make boxes with Google's official TV software. They give you Google Play's full range of players at a range of prices. Avoid unbranded, uncertified boxes, which often run outdated software. Our Android TV box buying guide explains what to look for.
Fire TV Cube, 4K Plus and 4K Max
If you like Fire TV, you don't have to leave it, as long as you stay on Fire OS. The Cube is Amazon's top model, with a faster processor and built-in Ethernet. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd generation) is the quickest stick, with 2 GB of memory and 16 GB of storage. All three can still install players from developers' websites. Check the product page says Fire OS before you buy.
MAG boxes
Dedicated IPTV set-top boxes that connect to a provider's portal rather than using apps. Simple and remote-friendly, but they only do IPTV and need a provider that supports portal access. Read using a MAG box for IPTV, and check with us before ordering for one.
Your smart TV's own apps
Sometimes the best alternative is no extra device. Samsung and LG TVs can run some IPTV players from their own app stores, though the choice is limited. See Samsung and LG.
What you gain and lose by leaving Fire TV
- You gain Google Play's wider choice of players on Google TV and Android TV, or the App Store's polish on Apple TV, and on most boxes a built-in Ethernet port.
- You lose Alexa built into the remote and the Fire TV home screen's close ties to Prime Video. Prime Video itself is available on Google TV, Android TV and Apple TV devices, as are the other main streaming apps.
- Your login comes with you. Your IPTV subscription isn't tied to Fire TV: the same login works in a player on any of these devices.
Moving to a new device
- Connect the new device to the TV and, ideally, to the router with an Ethernet cable.
- Install system updates before anything else.
- Install your player app from the device's official store; see our player guide if your usual app isn't available.
- Sign in with the same login details you used on the Fire Stick. If both devices will be used at once, check your plan's screen limit.
- Turn on frame-rate matching and set the output resolution to match your TV.
- Add your favourite channels again; favourites usually don't transfer between devices.
Your old Fire Stick doesn't have to go in a drawer: it can serve a bedroom or kitchen TV, within your plan's screen limit.
Our pick by situation
- Simple upgrade with more app choice: Google TV Streamer.
- Maximum performance and settings: Nvidia Shield TV.
- Apple household: Apple TV 4K.
- Staying with Amazon: Fire TV Cube or a Fire TV Stick 4K Max, on Fire OS.
- IPTV only, cable-box simplicity: a MAG box, if your provider supports it.
Whichever you choose, it works with our IPTV subscription plans through a compatible player app. Tell us your device when you order and we'll confirm.
