IPTV apps for iPhone and iPad

Watch your subscription on the move. Here's how to choose an App Store player, sign in and keep data use under control.

On iPhone and iPad, IPTV players come from the App Store. There's no single “official” app; several independent developers make players that accept an Xtream Codes login or an M3U playlist. Names you're likely to see include Smarters Player Lite (from the makers of IPTV Smarters Pro), GSE Smart IPTV and IPTVX. VLC can also play M3U links, without a TV guide.

Smarters Player Lite is a good starting point if you use Smarters elsewhere. Its App Store listing needs iOS 15.6 or later, it's free to download with optional in-app purchases, and the same app runs on Apple TV.

What to look for in an iOS IPTV app

  • Xtream Codes support, so you can sign in with three short details instead of a long link.
  • A proper TV guide if you watch live channels, and catch-up support if you use it.
  • AirPlay and picture-in-picture, so you can send video to a TV or keep watching while using other apps.
  • Apple TV and Mac versions, if you want the same app across devices; some purchases cover all three.
  • Recent updates and reviews. A player that hasn't been updated for a year may not work well with the latest iOS.
  • Clear pricing. Many players are free with an optional upgrade; check what's locked before relying on one.

Setting up

  1. Install your chosen player from the App Store.
  2. Choose the option to add a playlist or log in with Xtream Codes.
  3. Enter your server URL, username and password exactly as provided. Copying and pasting from your message avoids typos.
  4. Allow the app a moment to load channels and the guide the first time.

Watching on a phone or tablet

  • Picture-in-picture: in players that support it, swipe up to go home while a channel is playing and it shrinks into a small window you can move around the screen.
  • On iPad: Split View or Stage Manager lets you keep the player open beside another app, such as a browser with live scores.
  • Screen lock: if the screen dims during long viewing, check your Auto-Lock setting in Settings > Display & Brightness. Most players keep the screen awake while video is playing.

Family devices and children

  • Sharing a paid unlock: if your player charges for an upgrade, check whether the developer allows Family Sharing, which lets up to five family members use some purchases without paying again.
  • Limiting what children can open: Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions controls which apps a child's iPhone or iPad can use, and most players also let you lock adult categories with a PIN.
  • Older devices: players need a reasonably recent iOS. Smarters Player Lite, for example, asks for iOS 15.6 or later, which runs on the iPhone 6s and newer.

Mobile data

Streaming uses a lot of data. As a rough guide, an HD stream at around 5 to 10 Mbps uses roughly 2 to 4.5 GB an hour. Unless you have a large or unlimited data plan, watch over Wi-Fi, and check whether your player has a lower quality option for mobile.

To stop a player using mobile data at all, go to Settings > Mobile Data, scroll to the list of apps and switch it off. It will still work over Wi-Fi, and you can switch it back on when you have data to spare.

Watching on the TV

Most players support AirPlay to an Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible TV: tap the AirPlay icon in the player, or use Screen Mirroring in Control Centre if the app has no icon. Many recent Samsung, LG and Sony TVs support AirPlay, as does the second-generation Sky Glass. It's handy for occasional viewing, but an app running directly on the TV is smoother. Common questions

Can I download channels to watch offline?

Live channels can't be downloaded. Some players can save on-demand items where the service allows it, but most viewing needs a connection.

Can I install IPTV apps from outside the App Store?

Use the App Store. Apps from other sources may be unsafe and, depending on where you are, may not install at all. There are enough App Store players that you shouldn't need anything else.

Is there a free IPTV app for iPhone?

Yes. Several players are free to download, including Smarters Player Lite and VLC, though some lock features behind an in-app purchase. The app itself never includes channels; those come from your subscription.
