IPTV player apps: how to choose one

An IPTV player is the app that turns your login into channels, a TV guide and on-demand menus. Here's how to pick the right one for your device.

What an IPTV player does

An IPTV player is an app that connects to the service you subscribe to and presents it as a TV experience: channel lists, an on-screen programme guide, favourites and, where the service supports them, catch-up and on-demand sections.

The app itself contains no channels. You add your service by entering an Xtream Codes login or an M3U playlist link. That means you can change app without changing your subscription, and the same login works in any compatible player.

How to choose the best IPTV app for you

Start with your device

Your device narrows the choice more than anything else. Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV devices have the widest selection, including TiviMate and IPTV Smarters Pro. Samsung and LG TVs run their own systems with a smaller set of apps such as Smart IPTV. Apple devices use App Store apps; see iPhone and iPad and Apple TV. Computers have the most flexible options: see Windows and Mac.

Check how it signs in

Apps that accept Xtream Codes logins are quicker to set up and usually load the guide and on-demand sections automatically. M3U-only apps work too, but you may have to add a separate guide link.

Look at the TV guide

If you watch mostly live TV, a clear grid-style guide makes a big difference day to day. TiviMate is popular for exactly that reason; Kodi can be configured to look similar.

Consider the cost

Several good players are free; others charge a one-off or yearly fee to unlock features or to use the app on a TV. That fee goes to the app developer, not to your IPTV provider.

Prefer official sources

Install from Google Play, the Amazon Appstore, the Samsung or LG app stores, the Apple App Store, the Microsoft Store or the developer's own website. Avoid “modded” or “cracked” versions, which are a common source of malware.

Common questions

Do IPTV apps come with channels?

No. Player apps are empty until you add a service. They play the channels from the subscription you enter, using an M3U link or an Xtream Codes login.

Are free IPTV players safe?

Well-known players from official app stores, such as VLC, are generally safe. The risk comes from modified versions and apps downloaded from unknown websites. Install from your device's official store or the developer's own site.

Can I use the same app on several devices?

Usually yes, if the app is available on each platform. Some paid apps license per device, so check the developer's terms. Your IPTV subscription's screen limit still decides how many can watch at once.
