How to watch IPTV on Apple TV

Apple TV 4K is one of the smoothest streaming devices you can buy, with a fast processor, 4K HDR support and an Ethernet port on some models. It doesn't come with an IPTV player, and apps can only be installed from the App Store, but several capable IPTV players are available for tvOS.

Which Apple TV do you have?

Every Apple TV model below can run current IPTV players: Apple's tvOS 26, released in September 2025, supports the Apple TV HD and all Apple TV 4K models. What differs is 4K and the network connection.

To check your model, go to Settings > General > About. If you have the Wi-Fi-only 3rd-generation model, keep the Apple TV in sight of your router, or use a mesh Wi-Fi point nearby.

Choosing an app

Search the App Store on your Apple TV for “IPTV”. Players you're likely to see include iPlayTV, IPTVX, GSE Smart IPTV and Smarters Player Lite (the Apple version of IPTV Smarters), and some developers offer one purchase that covers iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. When comparing them, look for:

• Login support: Xtream Codes sign-in is easiest; some players only take M3U links.
• A clear guide: a grid-style TV guide if you mostly watch live channels.
• Siri Remote controls: quick channel switching with the touchpad or clickpad.
• Recent updates: apps that keep up with tvOS releases.
• Pricing: many are free to try with a one-off or subscription unlock, paid to the developer.

The App Store's ratings and recent reviews are a good guide here. A player that hasn't been updated for a year or more may still work, but it's more likely to break after a tvOS update.

Signing in without the pain of typing

Entering a server address with the Siri Remote is slow. Most good players let you type on your iPhone instead: when the Apple TV keyboard appears, a notification on your iPhone lets you use its keyboard. You can also open the Apple TV Remote from the iPhone's Control Centre. Some apps also let you add a playlist from a web page or sync it from the iPhone version of the app.

Settings that improve live TV

• Match frame rate: in Settings > Video and Audio > Match Content, turn on Match Frame Rate. UK broadcasts mostly run at 50 frames per second, and matching avoids judder in sport. See IPTV for sports for more on live sport settings.
• Match dynamic range: turning on Match Dynamic Range stops standard content being shown in HDR mode, which can look washed out.
• Format: set the Apple TV to 4K SDR at 50 Hz and let Match Content switch to HDR when needed.
• Sound through a soundbar: if the first second of sound goes missing when you change channel, look for the Continuous Audio Connection option that tvOS 26.4 added to the Video and Audio settings.
• Network: if your model has an Ethernet port, use it.

Is Apple TV worth it for IPTV?

If you're already in Apple's world, or want the most responsive experience and don't mind paying more for the hardware, yes. Apple TV boxes also tend to receive software updates for many years, so the device you buy now should keep running new versions of IPTV players for a long time.
