IPTV players for Android phones and tablets

Your Android phone or tablet can play your IPTV subscription anywhere with a good connection. Here's how to pick and set up a player.

Android has the widest choice of IPTV players of any platform. This guide is about phones and tablets. If you want to watch on a TV with an Android-based box or stick, see our guides to Android TV boxes and Google TV devices, where apps such as TiviMate are designed for the big screen.

  • IPTV Smarters Pro: an easy all-rounder with Xtream Codes sign-in and sections for live TV, films and series. See our Smarters guide.
  • VLC for Android: free and reliable for playing an M3U link, though without a TV guide. Some players can also hand playback over to VLC, which is a useful fix when a channel won't play in the player's own engine.
  • Other Google Play players: there are many. Favour ones with recent updates, clear privacy information and good reviews from the last few months.

What to look for

  • Support for Xtream Codes logins and a separate EPG link.
  • A choice of internal players or decoders, which helps when a channel won't play or has no sound.
  • Chromecast support if you want to send video to your TV.
  • Picture-in-picture, so you can keep watching while replying to a message.
  • Reasonable permissions. A video player shouldn't need your contacts or SMS.

Setting up

  1. Install your player from Google Play.
  2. Open it and choose to add a playlist or log in with Xtream Codes.
  3. Enter your details exactly as provided, then wait for channels and the guide to load.
  4. Add your favourite channels so they're easy to find on a small screen.

Settings that make a difference

  • Battery: in Settings > Apps, open the player, choose Battery and set it to Unrestricted. This stops Android pausing playback when the screen is off or another app is open. Menu names vary a little between phone makers.
  • Picture-in-picture: make sure it's allowed under Settings > Apps > Special app access > Picture-in-picture.
  • Mobile data: the player's app info page lets you turn off mobile data for it, so it only streams over Wi-Fi.
  • Tablets: lock the screen to landscape while watching, so the picture doesn't flip when you move.

Chromebooks and headphones

Most Chromebooks made in the last few years can install Android apps from Google Play, so the same players work on them, with a bigger screen and a keyboard for typing your login. Look for Google Play in the Chromebook's launcher; if it's there, install your player as you would on a tablet.

If you watch with Bluetooth earbuds or headphones and the sound runs slightly behind the picture, that's Bluetooth's own delay rather than a problem with the stream. Many players have an audio delay setting in their playback options that lets you line the two up again; wired headphones avoid it altogether.

Mobile data and battery

Video streaming uses a lot of data: roughly 2 to 4.5 GB an hour for HD, depending on quality. Use Wi-Fi where you can. Streaming also drains the battery quickly, so lower the screen brightness and plug in for long matches.

Casting to your TV

If your player supports Chromecast, you can send video to a Chromecast or Google TV device. It's convenient, but your phone and the TV device both need a strong Wi-Fi signal. For everyday TV viewing, running an app directly on a TV streaming device is more dependable.

Common questions

Can I use TiviMate on my phone?

TiviMate is designed for TV devices, not phones. On a phone or tablet, choose a player built for touch screens, such as IPTV Smarters Pro.

Why does my phone app stop when I switch apps?

Android may pause video apps in the background to save battery. Use picture-in-picture if your player supports it, or allow the app to run without battery restrictions in your phone's settings.

Can I watch on my phone while someone watches the TV?

Yes, if your plan has enough screens. Each device playing at the same time uses one screen, so a phone and a TV together need a 2-screen plan.
