Amazon's Fire TV Stick plugs into any HDMI port and turns a TV into a smart TV. It's inexpensive, comes with a voice remote and can run popular IPTV players, which makes it one of the most common choices for watching IPTV in the UK. The one thing to get right is the model, because Amazon now sells sticks on two different systems.
Choosing the right model
Most Fire TV devices run Fire OS, which is based on Android and can install apps from outside Amazon's store. Amazon's newest sticks run Vega OS, which only installs apps from the Amazon Appstore. For IPTV, that difference matters more than any other specification.
| Model | System | Apps from outside the Appstore | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd gen, 2023) | Fire OS | Yes | 4K Premium and large TV guides; Wi-Fi 6E |
| Fire TV Stick 4K Plus | Fire OS | Yes | 4K Premium; sold as the Fire TV Stick 4K until late 2025 |
| Fire TV Cube (3rd gen) | Fire OS | Yes | 4K Premium, with a built-in Ethernet port |
| Fire TV Stick 4K Select | Vega OS | No, Amazon Appstore only | Check your player is listed first |
| Fire TV Stick HD (2026) | Vega OS | No, Amazon Appstore only | Check your player is listed first |
| Older Fire OS sticks (HD, Lite, earlier 4K) | Fire OS | Yes | HD Premium; can be slow with big guides |
- For 4K Premium: choose a 4K model on Fire OS. They support 4K, HDR and HEVC, and the 4K Max adds faster Wi-Fi and more processing power, which helps with large channel lists.
- For HD Premium: any Fire OS stick works.
- Older sticks: early generations can be slow with big TV guides. See our tips on speeding up a Fire Stick.
Installing an IPTV player
From the Amazon Appstore (recommended)
Search the Appstore on your Fire TV for an IPTV player. Several are listed, and availability changes over time. Installing from the Appstore means the app is checked by Amazon and updates automatically. On a Vega OS stick, this is the only way to install a player. Our IPTV player guide explains what to look for.
From the developer's website (Fire OS only)
Some well-known players, such as IPTV Smarters Pro and TiviMate, may not be in the Appstore in every region. On Fire OS devices you can install an app downloaded from its developer's official website using the Downloader app. To allow this:
Turn on developer options
Go to Settings > My Fire TV > About and select your device name seven times until a message confirms developer options are on.Allow the Downloader app to install apps
Go to Settings > My Fire TV > Developer options > Install unknown apps, and switch it on for Downloader only.Download from the official source
In Downloader, enter the developer's own website address. Avoid short codes and download links shared on forums or social media.Switch the permission off again
Once the app is installed, turn “Install unknown apps” off for Downloader.
Apps installed this way don't update through the Appstore. When the player says a new version is available, update it from inside the app or repeat the steps above using the same official address. Amazon also blocks some apps outright: if you see an “app installation blocked” message, Amazon has flagged that app and doesn't offer exceptions, so choose a different, mainstream player.
Which player works best on a Fire TV Stick?
- TiviMate: built for TV remotes, with a grid TV guide that feels like a satellite box. Recording and catch-up need its paid Premium upgrade.
- IPTV Smarters Pro: separate sections for live TV, films and series, and a simple Xtream Codes sign-in.
- Appstore players: install and update automatically. Check that the one you choose supports Xtream Codes logins or M3U playlists before you rely on it.
If you mostly watch live channels, a guide-led player like TiviMate is the easiest to live with. If you watch more films and series, Smarters' layout may suit you better. You can install both and sign in to each with the same subscription, as long as only one is playing at a time on a 1-screen plan.
Signing in
Open the player and choose to log in with Xtream Codes, then enter the server URL, username and password from your subscription. Typing with the remote is easier if you use the on-screen keyboard's voice input or the Fire TV app on your phone as a keyboard. See Xtream Codes logins explained for the exact format.
Getting smooth playback
- Power: use the plug and cable supplied, not a USB port on the TV, which may not provide enough power.
- Network: use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band, keep the router close, or add Amazon's Ethernet adapter for a wired connection. The Fire TV Cube has an Ethernet port built in.
- HDMI extender: use the short extender cable that comes with the stick if the TV's back panel blocks the Wi-Fi signal.
- Storage: uninstall apps you don't use. To clear a player's cache, go to Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications, choose the player and select Clear cache. Avoid Clear data unless you're happy to sign in again.
- Updates: install Fire OS updates from Settings > My Fire TV > About.
